The days are becoming shorter and nights are becoming cold and crisp. Red, yellow and orange leaves are falling from the trees, which can only mean one thing. Autumn's here and Bonfire Night is around the corner. It's time to wrap up in padded coats and woolly hats, while gathering round the bonfire watching the fireworks dance in the night sky.
Bonfire Night is celebrated on November 5th after Guy Fawkes and his companions tried to blow up the houses of parliament, they smuggled 36 barrels of gunpowder into the cellar, which would have completely demolished the building. When Londoners knew that their King had been saved they joyfully lit bonfires to show their thanks. 400 years on and the tradition is still going strong, we make our own Guy Fawkes dummies to chuck on bonfires and light fireworks to fill the sky.
A bonfire wouldn't be complete without the traditional meals and snacks to go with the night. Pie and Peas, Hot Dogs, Chilli Con Carne, Jacket Potato, Cinder Toffee, Treacle Toffee (Bonfire Toffee) and of course Toffee Apples. We can provide you with two and a "How To" for the Toffee Apples. Our Treacle Toffee is made using thick treacle and golden syrup. Once you've tasted this toffee it sticks to the inside of your mouth and won't let go until it has let all its strong, sticky, gooey flavours out. And our Cinder Toffee is handmade and has a crisp crunchy texture. When melted in your mouth it crackles and sticks to your teeth.
How To Make Toffee Apples
- Apples ( Amount depends on how many your making for)
- Sprinkles, Nuts (Optional)
- Johnson's Toffee and Fudges Treacle Toffee (Bonfire Toffee)
1: Lightly grease some baking trays. Insert lollipop sticks into the whole, stemmed apples.
2: Boil water in a pan and place a glass bowl over. Add Johnson's Treacle Toffee to the bowl and melt, stirring continuously.
3: When melted hold the apple by its stick, dip each apple into the treacle toffee and turn to coat evenly. Add sprinkles and place on prepared tray to harden.
